When it comes the Inca Trail you may think of a hard trek through the Andes mountain range, camping and regular food ending the trek in the Inca city of Machu Picchu, this is true of what of what most people experience. This is a very popular trek for hikers from all over the world and needs to be reserved months in advance as permits sell out very quickly. But now there is an alternative to the basic camping Inca Trail with the introduction of the luxury Inca Trail trek, you will not have to rough it any longer.
Many companies in Peru now offer 4-day luxury Inca Trails treks, with all the luxuries of a hotel to pass your night. Here is what you should expect on a luxury Inca Trail trek.
The first day you will be transferred to km82 (Piscacucho), the official start of the Inca Trail, from there you will follow the course of the Urubamba river, take it easy as you get acclimatized to the altitude, until you reach Llaqtapata an interesting archeological site, where you will take a rest stop and be amazed by the view whilst being served a delicious lunch complete with a glass of wine.
After lunch you will hike again, climbing to the village of Wayllabamba, where you will spend the night, once you arrive into the campsite the tents will be pitched and you will have time to relax and have a massage to finish the day.
On day two you will wake up early and enjoy a hearty breakfast to fuel your body for the day ahead, the main objective of today is to reach Wirrniwanusca, or as it is known Dead Woman’s Pass, which is at an altitude of 4200 meters, a hard climb but once you reach the top the rest of the day will be all downhill. Once you reach camp you again have a refreshing massage and a delicious dinner before getting a well-deserved rest.
Day three again starts with a big breakfast, then trekking up to 3900 meters to Runcuracay Pass, after which you will descend for 2 hours to the incredible Sayacmarca archeological site, you will have time to explore the ruins and enjoy the spectacular countryside, there are many great photo opportunities here. After a short rest you will resume the hike to the third pass, Phuyupatamarca, 3800 meters above sea level in the semi tropical rainforest, from here you will continue along the trail to Winay Waynba, the last campsite on the trail, enjoy a massage which will be well deserved after a trek of eight hours.
The fourth and final day is what you have been waiting for, in the morning you will awake early and after a great breakfast you will hike to the Sun gate where you will enjoy your first view of Machu Picchu, take a while to marvel at the view and take photos before you make your way down to Machu Picchu, after a brief rest you will start your two hour tour of Machu Picchu with your guide who will give you a complete history of Machu Picchu and answer any questions that you may have, when your tour in Machu Picchu finished this will mark the end of your luxury Inca Trail trek.
When you have finished in Machu Picchu a delicious lunch awaits, afterward go down to the town of Aguas Calientes where you will have to time to explore this cute little town or if you feel like it why not take a dip in the hot springs just on the outside of town. Later you will board your luxury train to Cusco. There are several choices of train to return to Cusco, either take the luxurious Belmond Hiram Bingham train with gourmet dinner and free drinks or the Vistadome train with its glass room and great service either train will be a luxury experience.
If you decide to spend the night at Machu Picchu instead of going back to Cusco there are a variety of luxury hotels in Machu Picchu to finish your luxury Inca trail trek, starting with the Belmond Machu Picchu Sanctuary hotel, five-star luxury at the gate of Machu Picchu. If you prefer to go down to the town of Aguas Calientes and stay, the beautiful Machu Picchu Pueblo hotel on the edge of town has beautiful gardens and cozy rooms with fireplaces.
