The 2001 earthquake caused significant damage, including the loss of two towers and part of the central cupola, followed by restoration and conservation efforts.
The Cathedral is lit at night, making a pretty picture while having dinner at one of the restaurants on the balconies above the plaza. Located on one corner of the Plaza de Armas, the Church of La Compañia de Jesus is known for its intricately carved façade and distinctive Baroque and mestizo Baroque features. Its detailed stonework makes it one of the most interesting architectural stops in Arequipa’s historic center.
No visit to Arequipa is complete without exploring the Santa Catalina Monastery. Founded in the sixteenth century, this expansive religious complex is often described as a “city within a city”, with narrow streets, courtyards, chapels, living quarters, and vividly painted walls. Its architecture and layout provide insight into the history of religious life in colonial Arequipa.
Take your time exploring its colorful passageways and courtyards, which make the monastery one of the city’s most distinctive attractions and a popular stop for photography. The greatest attraction of the region is not some church built from volcanic stone. Rather, tourists flock to the region to admire the majestic condor in full flight, marveling as these massive flying beasts swoop right past onlookers in search of hot updrafts, which allow them to effortlessly glide around the canyon. One of the best places to see condors in Peru is without a doubt the Cruz del Condor at the Colca Canyon.
Colca Canyon is one of the world’s deepest canyons, with some sections reaching more than 3,000 meters in depth. Colca Canyon Tours through the region last two to three days, depending on the amount of time spent hiking each day, and pass through breathtaking scenery as the glorious condor flies overhead.
For experienced hikers, climbing El Misti can be one of the most challenging adventures near Arequipa. The volcano rises to about 5,822 meters (19,101 feet), and a typical ascent takes around two days. Because of the elevation and physical demands of the climb, proper acclimatization, preparation, and an appropriate guide or organized tour are important considerations.
