As we mentioned before, most visitors come to Puno via Cusco. We will outline the different ways to get to Lake Titicaca.
If you are short on time, this is the fastest option from Cusco to Lake Titicaca.
There is no airport in Puno itself, the closest airport is in the nearby city of Juliaca (around 40 km.). The flight will take around 1 hour and once you arrive there, you have to take a taxi to reach Puno. It will take you roughly one hour as well.
The PeruRail Titicaca Train is the most luxurious and pleasurable option from Cusco to Lake Titicaca. Actually, it may be the best option by most. Although the ride is slightly longer -around 10 hours-, its opulent first-class accommodations make it completely worth it. Time will pass like a breeze.
This luxury train counts with lounge-chair seating, two dining cars, a bar car and observation car at the back where you will witness the most beautiful and breathtaking Peruvian highlands. It also offers delicious meals elaborated with select ingredients and an incredible folklore show with traditional Peruvian singers and dancers.

The most popular way to get to Puno is by bus. The ride takes between 8-9 hours and it makes several cultural stops (bilingual guided stops) along the way. Some of them are at archaeological sites and a museum. Also, the bus makes stops at rest-stops and restaurants. It normally includes Snack and onboard hostess assistance.
Making some interesting stops along the way will give you the opportunity to deepen into the Andean culture. Puno is mainly known for being the place where the fascinating Lake Titicaca takes place, but it has much more to offer. It is remarkably rich in legends and music, that’s why Puno is considered the Folkloric Capital of Peru and America. Without a doubt, there is a vast list of things to do in Puno.
Continuing with the bus information, these are the places you will see along the route:
- Andahuaylillas: known as the “Sixteenth Chapel of the Americas”. Its colonial artwork dates back to the XVI and XVII centuries. Entrance fee: $1.5 USD per person.
- Raqchi: Ancient temple dedicated to Inca God Wiracocha. Entrance fee: $2 USD per person.
- Sicuani: The place for rest and have lunch
- La Raya: The highest point of the trip where you will witness the sublime scenery of the Andes, snow-peaked mountains and also, alpacas.
- Pukara: Ancient archaeological complex which dates back to around 4,000 B.C. It was constructed in a pyramidal shape.
