Before going on any vacation it is always a good idea to go through some things to have a great time without any unplanned inconveniences. When it comes to your Peru vacation there is no exception, here are some things that might help you to plan your visit a little bit better:
When to go to Peru
The majority of people spend their vacation in summer, however, only a few people spend their winter holiday, after Christmas with the whole family, in a different country. Some might be deterred to go to Peru in this time since it is rainy season in the Andes and their main destination is Cusco and Machu Picchu. But do not be scared! Visiting Peru in January is actually quite nice. When it come so the Andes you will encounter rainy season (from November to March) with quite some rain but therefore with beautiful surroundings, everything is blooming and much greener.
Along the coastal part of Peru, for example Lima, you will enjoy a nice and warm weather with very little rain, if any rain at all. Regarding the Amazon region, there it is even warmer. Contrary to the coast it is quite humid, though. A general plus is that there are way less people, so if you are not into big waves of tourists you might want to consider planning your vacation in January.
Also make sure to have a passport that is at least still 6 months valid on your departure date! You usually get a Tourist Visa for 183 days automatically once you went through migrations at the airport, however, there might be exceptions for some countries. Please inform yourself before going on vacation.
An important point to think about before travelling is an estimated amount of the holiday cost. That depends very much on what you have planned, luxury tours, backpacking or just relaxing, and as well on how long you will stay. To be able to calculate your Peru vacation cost it is helpful to know what the currency of Peru is: The Nuevo Sol. Although this is the official currency you can pay in US Dollars quite a lot, mainly when it comes to hotel reservations, tourist restaurants, travel agencies or in touristy shops and places like Aguas Calientes (town at Machu Picchu).
Your budget will depend a lot on your preferred means of transportation. Especially for longer distances in Peru taking a flight to your destination will be a lot faster, but usually also a lot more expensive. Although domestic flights tend to be cheaper when booking in Peru. Most flights to domestic locations like Arequipa, Cusco, Puerto Maldonado and Iquitos can be reached from Lima Jorge Chávez International Airport or Cusco Alejandro Velasco Astete International Air port, whereas it is quite difficult or sometimes even impossible to find national flights from other cities. However, you might find a bus company that will take you to your desired destination without having to go back to Cusco or Lima by plane. The bus system in Peru is quite advanced and you will find numerous buses that take you to your next stop. Prices range quite a lot, depending on which service you prefer. You can book buses directly at the terminal or in advance. Please keep in mind that bus tours take way longer. Most of the bus companies offer rides during the night, so you get to safe time and just sleep in the bus before. Please check at the bus terminal for more information.
Things to see
During your holiday there are plenty of Peru tourist places to see, from the Amazon in the north- and south-east to the Andes mountain range stretching from north to south to the coast on the west. Depending on how much time you have and where you interests lay you have to set your priorities or you can even combine. It is recommendable to have a slight plan of your preferred distances so you can check out transportation accordingly.
If you are planning on a Peru family tour and travelling with underaged children be aware that most transport companies, hotels and restaurants offer discounts as well as entrance tickets (for example to Machu Picchu) are cheaper. To be able to get a discount you often need a copy of your childs passport. Do not forget to ask! Since travelling with small children can sometimes be a bit stressfull it is worth contacting different travel agencies as they often offer family-friendly tour packages, with lots of places interesting to see for both parents and children on your Peru vacation.
